Kadina , SA
Kadina,
the largest town on Yorke Peninsula and 150km north of Adelaide, shot to prominence
with the discovery of a rich copper lode at nearby Wallaroo in 1859. The copper
not only brought prosperity to the district, but the experienced miners gave
it a distinct Cornish heritage to this north-western rim of the peninsula.
A Cornish festival, the Kernewek Lowender, is celebrated every second May
in Kadina, Wallaroo and Moonta- the three towns forming the copper-rich triangle
known as Little Cornwall.
The museum complex includes Matta House, which was built in 1863 for the manager
of the Matta Matta copper mine, while the Banking and Currency Museum is Australia’s
only private collection of notes, coins and bank paraphernalia. The Wombat
and Royal Exchange hotels recall an age of graceful iron-laced balconies and
sweeping verandahs. Fine beaches and their fish beckon from the near west
coastal resorts of Moonta Bay and Port Hughes.
