Moonta is one of the towns which bind the Yorke Peninsula’s famous Copper
Triangle. Today the population falls well short of the 1875 peak of 12,000
when huge tonnages of copper ore were mined from the region, but those heady
days are reflected in the buildings staked by mining wealth and which make
Moonta one of the state’s most valuable heritage assets.
The triangle is also known as Little Cornwall and the community’s indebtedness
to the many Cornishmen who crossed the world to work the mines is celebrated
in the three towns in May of every odd-numbered year with the Kernewek Lowender
festival. The Cornish link is reinforced in the Moonta Mines Museum displays,
which also include hands-on exhibits by which children can follow the mining
cycle.
Directly across the road from the museum the Old Sweet Shop introduces children
to traditional humbugs and the like, while their parents can chomp into a
Cornish pastie. It is just a short drive from this historic town to Moonta
Bay
