Morgan is 165 km north-east of Adelaide by road and 315km by water from the river’s entrance to Lake Alexandrina. The township is located on what is variously known as the Great Bend, the Great Elbow' or, more prosaically, North-west Bend on the Mighty Murray. The Morgan heritage trail takes you on the round of the town’s historic buildings and towering wharves.
Most
of the historic buildings, including the customs house and courthouse, are
concentrated on Railway Terrace. The 12m high wharves were constructed exclusively
for the paddle steamers which once plied the Murray-Darling rivers system
and one craft built in 1884, the Mayflower, is still operating from Morgan.
You can hire a houseboat to cruise in the wake of the old riverboats.
The district includes a number of reserves. Across the river from the town,
Morgan Conservation Park is a favourite haunt for fossil fossickers, while
Hogwash Flat Park is recognised as one of the best fishing spots in the region.
