Port Augusta was earmarked as a strategic port in 1802, but it wasn’t until 1854 that serious development of the small settlement at the head of Fitzgerald Bay began. Within a few years huge tonnages of wool, wheat and minerals were crossing Augusta’s wharves. The shipping boom is over, but the Flinders Ranges largest city remains an important railhead.

Modern Port Augusta is distinguished by green, shady parks and gardens which strike a sharp contrast to the near desert landscape that greets your approach to the city. Because of its historic significance, Port Augusta also has much to offer the visitor on the two-hour Heritage Walk. Your itinerary should also include the Wadlata Outback Centre which transports you back to the Dreamtime, the Royal Flying Doctor Service headquarters and a call to watch School of the Air teachers reach out to students in some of Australia’s most remote areas.
