Tanunda is at the centre of South Australia’s prime wine bowl, the Barossa
Valley. A sizeable town of more than 3500, Tanunda has grown out of the village
of Langmeil which was established in 1843 on the banks of the North Para River
by the first wave of Germans to settle in the Barossa. Most were Silesian
and Prussian refugees fleeing religious persecution.
The character of the village is preserved in magnificent old Lutheran churches.
The St Johns life-size statuary of Peter, Paul, Moses, Jeremaiah and Christ,
the spire and orb of Tabor Church or the tree-lined entrance to Lagmeil Lutheran
Church.
