Wudinna
is 570km north-west of Adelaide, Wudinna is an important service centre for
the central Eyre Peninsula. Dominating the skyline 10 km north-east of the
town, Mt Wudinna, which, at 261m in height, is the second largest granite
outcrop in Australia. Only Bald Rock, just out of Tenterfield in the northern
NSW granite belt, is larger. There is a BBQ and shelter-equipped recreation
area at the base of the huge rock where you can recover after a hike to the
summit to take in the breath-taking views.
The half-hour drive from Wudinna to the mountain features of some of the smaller,
bare granite hills in the region and low-stone walls which were built by pioneer
settlers at the base of the rocks to store and divert run-off water.
