Warrumbungle
National Park
550km west of Sydney, has few peers for camping and day walks. Rocky spires,
barren of vegetation, left over from volcanos some 16 million years ago, are
burnt red and gold by the setting sun. At sunset, when the colours darken
and the sounds of the bush cease, the park offers the peace and serenity only
found in away-from-it-all places where no phones ring, no trucks rumble by,
and no computer keys beckon.
Mount
Kaputar National Park
Located 53km east of Narrabri this park features a peak on a receding edge
, the remnents of an 18 million year old volcano, the slopes of which are
covered with open forest and savannah woodland.
The park is a popular place for rockclimbers and has some great short wilderness walks. Camping is permitted at Dawsons Spring or the Bark Hut. Phone: (067) 924 724 or (067) 924 731
