The
northern NSW town of Kyogle is the commercial centre for rich dairy and mixed
agricultural land. The World Heritage -listed Border Ranges National Park, with
its well-defined walking tracks, lookouts to Mt Warning and the Tweed Valley,
is just 27km to the north-east. Lismore, 30km to the south, leads to coastal
resorts the likes of Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay.
Scenic drives through the ranges lead north to Warwick and the Darling Downs
and to Rathdowney in the Gold Coast hinterland. There are plenty of camping
and picnic spots in the Kyogle district and bass and catfish lure the angler
to the regional waterways and nearby Toonumbar Dam. Your first stop in Kyogle
should be the Captain Cook Memorial Lookout at the top of Mt Fairy which stands
guard over the town.
Toonumbar State Forest takes in the headwater of the Richmond River and is an important feeding ground for bowerbirds.
