Lorn
is located near Maitland CBD directly across the Hunter River. Whereas Maitland,
East Maitland and Morpeth were among the earliest white settlements on this
stretch of the Hunter, Lorn was developed as a private subdivision around the
turn of the 20th century.
Although almost 200 years have passed since freed convict Molly Morgan opened
her euphemistically-named shanty pub, the Angel Inn, on an early stock route,
the Maitland area retains much of the charm of colonial days. That charm is
warmly reflected in the city's stock of such magnificent early colonial buildings
as Brough House and adjoining Grossman House
