Located 52 km from Newcastle and 151 kilometres north of Sydney Cessnock has
prospered with the peaks and troughs of the coal mining industry.
Settlement began in the 1850’s around a road junction 30 years before coal was discovered. The score of vineyards of the Lower Hunter cover low hills to the north and west.
| Cessnock’s economic base now has wine and tourism that has replaced coal as the region’s primary earner. The huge increase in the number of visitors drawn to the region by the commercialisation of the wineries of the Lower Hunter has led to an explosion in the volume and range of guesthouses, motels and restaurants, and in such spin-off tourist industries as hot air ballooning and equestrian centres. |
