Established in 1836 when Enoch Rudder started a punt service across the Macleay
River the town situated in the fertile Macleay valley which is mainly covered
with dairy farms. The first white men in the area were timber cutters and
lumber is still a main industry of this area.
Kempsey is a large rural town supporting district dairy farms and growing tourism and light industries - including the famous Aussie hat company, Akubra. The river settlement, which is located at the halfway point between Sydney and Brisbane
The second oldest town on the mid-north coast. To the south at Pipers Creek are overgrown remains of lime kilns once worked by convicts. Inland are Tamban, Ingalba and Collombati State forests.
