South
West Rocks
The largest seaside resort in the Kempsey area, located 32 klm north east
of Kempsey at the mouth of the Macleay river.
South
West Rocks might not be the most inviting name on the tourist trail, but this
resort village at the mouth of the Macleay River.
It has safe beaches, river cruises, good surf and river fishing. Nearby, the
Trial Bay goal has a fascinating glimpse of the past. Built by convict labour
in the twilight of the 19th century, the gaol was used as an internment centre
for German nationals during World War I.
Just south of South West Rocks, in Hat Head National Park, is the spectacular
Smoky Cape Lighthouse
A pleasant resort on trial Bay near the mouth of the Macleay River. Visit the southern headland where the roofless remains of a gaol built in 1876 to house prisoners still stands.
