Humpty Doo , NT
Although
some regard Humpty Doo as a monument to a failed experiment to convert 300,000ha
into a giant rice paddy, a growing number of Darwin commuters fancy the town
as a laid-back residential alternative to the capital. This delightfully named
town, which lies just 50km south from Darwin along the Arnhem Highway toward
Kakadu, missed out on the rice bonanza when water buffalo and waterfowl invaded
the CSIRO’s experimental farm and floodwaters took care of what was
left of the crop.
Visit Fogg Dam, which
is a significant bird sanctuary, while the local United house of worship is
known as the church with no walls.
Struggling township whose catchy name became well known in the 1950s for a planned rice growing project. Fogg Dam, one of the earthworks from the rice days, is a popular attraction.
