Main town of the Top End, apart from Darwin, and centre of an extensive pastoral area. Katherine Karnival is held in June and there is a rodeo in August. The agricultural show is in July or August.
Katherine Gorge
Breathtaking scenic wonder, a spectacular canyon winding back into the fringe of the Arnhem Land plateau for 12km and overpowered by sheer walls more than 70m high. Most visitors take a boat trip along the first two gorges only, which entails a short walk form one to the other, but for the more energetic there are another 11 gorges upstream.
| 310 kms S of Darwin. Travel by car via the Stuart & Victoria Hwys. Weekly Ghan passenger train from Adelaide or Darwin. Located close to the Katherine River, it is known as the gateway to the Top End. Festivals include Barunga Festival (June), Katherine Show (July). |  |
