Pine Creek, NT
Pine Creek is about 250 km south of Darwin and 90km north of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The town was established after a brief gold rush period during the 1870s. Gold was discovered while drilling holes for the Overland Telegraph Line.
Interest in Pine Creek's gold deposits was recently renewed with the introduction of new mining techniques. Mining continues to be a industry of the town.
A century ago the hills surrounding the peaceful little town echoed with the sounds of activity of the Territory’s first gold field .Pieces of disused machinery are scattered through the hilly woodland. Just the old tin pub and a few stores remain.
