Located on the fringe of the Poona National Park at the northern end of the Cooloola Coast, Boonooroo-Sandy Straits.

Boonooroo is accessible from the south through Cooroy or Gympie and through Maryborough from the north. Boonooroo is on the shores of the Great Sandy Straits which divide the mainland from the world's largest sand island (Fraser island) and which can be leisurely explored aboard a hired house boat.
