Childers is not your regular Queensland sugar town. It is located 325 kilometres north of Brisbane. A magnificent row of Brazilian leopard trees divides the main street. Many of the stores have old frontages of fussy Victorian baroque ornamentation.
| It boasts Australia’s only pharmaceutical museum. The museum houses the pills, potions, phials and other fascinating paraphernalia collected during a lifetime by Thomas Gaydon, who operated Childer's only chemist shop from 1894 until his death in 1935. |
Although the business eventually passed out of the Gaydon family’s hands, the subsequent owners had a sense of history and faithfully retained Gaydon’s tools, equipment and records, which are now in the stewardship of the local council.
Childers
is popular with back packers due to the seasonal fruit picking work that can
be found in the region.
