Clermont prospered when the Blair Athol open-cut miners tapped into the world’s largest seam of steaming-coal in the late 1970s. A two and a half hour bus tour of the mining operation, which is anchored by a 510m dragline, leaves from the town Information Centre.
The town was alos mined for copper in the mid 1800s. But in 1907 the copper mine was closed. You can still see remnants of the copper mine with one chimney stack remaninng out of the original 22 chimney stacks. View the history of copper mining in the region at The Copperfield Store.
