82
kilometres south-west of Bowen, Collinsville offer travellers a striking scenic
contrast to the tropical coastline. After leaving the Bruce Highway, the road
passes small crop farms bordering the Don River, then cattle country and the
village of Binbee and its Dingo’s Boudoir. About another 30km on is
Collinsville, a town whose 2500 citizens have been shaped by coal. A Peter
Lawson mural dominates the main street, and a tour of the Scottville mine
reveals all about open-cut coal mining. The rocky outcrops and hills in the
Collinsville-Binbee hinterland are famous for their sapphires, amethyst crystals
and opalised woods .
Coal mining town on the western slopes of Clarke Range. Gemstone fossicking can turn up amethyst, agate and opals.
