Middlemount
on central Queensland’s Peak Downs was purpose-built in the early 1980s
to service the mining industry’s rich coal deposits German Creek, the
major mine in the area, is unusual in that the miners have used both open
cut and underground technology to work the field. Middlemount lies about 80km
east of the dominant feature on the landscape, the Peak Range. Made up of
a series of lava plugs formed more than 30 million years ago, the range is
dressed in mountain coolibah, ironbark, bloodwood and wattle scrub.
Midlemount is part of the Broadsound Shire.
