Murgon
is about 45km north of Kingaroy - claims the title of beef cattle capital
of Queensland’s Burnett region. Its name is derived from the Aboriginal
word for lily pond. Of particular regional interest is the Cherbourg emu farm,
run by the local Aboriginal community.
You can tour this busy little farm, and pick up all sorts of emu products
and Aboriginal artefacts.
The Bjelke-Petersen dam is a popular spot for water sports, fishing and picnics,
while the nearby gemfields present fossickers with the chance to scavenge
for precious and semi-precious stones. The significant events in the Queensland
dairy industry are recorded in Murgon’s Dairy Museum, which is open
from 2pm to 4pm at weekends.
