Muttaburra is a pastoral town situated on the junction of the Thompson and Landsborough Rivers. These rivers are usually a series of waterholes which get smaller, and completely dry out in the winter. After good rains they flow, and in the event of a flood, they turn into ragging torrents, which can be miles wide. In the record floods of March 1995, these waters were nearly three miles wide, completely covering all but the highest between Mt Cornish homestead and the township. The average rainfall is about sixteen inches and is irregular both in the quantity and the period in which it falls.
