Tugun

Down
by Coolangatta Airport at the southern end of the Gold Coast, Tugun offers some
relief from the hectic pace of Surfers Paradise while still providing long stretches
of golden beaches and a lot of water sport alternatives. The surf beach is patrolled
and the Tugun Surf Life-Saving Club is the perfect spot to quaff an ice-cold
ale while taking in the millionaire view of a sunlit ocean.
Tugun is just a short drive from Coolangatta and the picture postcard mouth
of the Tweed River that basically defines the boundary between Queensland and
New South Wales. Just a few minutes to the north on the coastal highway, Currumbin
Creek enters the sea, presenting calm water for bathing and waterskiing, nice
clean sand for sun bathing, and plenty of room for light sand and rock fishing,
but it does get a bit crowded in summer.
Take a leisurely stroll north along Tugun beach up to Flat Rock, where there’s
a nifty little park right on the ocean. The famous Currumbin Bird Sanctuary
is just up the road, too.
