The Tropical Coast stretches from Tully in the south with its world famous river rafting to Port Douglas in the north where two World Heritage areas merge on this tropical paradise. Fishing for Black Marlin, diving on the Barrier Reef or relaxing on a tropical Island are all within easy reach.

Take a cruise up the Daintree River into the world acclaimed Daintree Rainforest National Park or visit the Atherton Tablelands, with World Heritage listed areas of rainforests, rivers, spectacular waterfalls, and lakes in extinct volcanoes.

The Atherton Tableland, which guards the western front of the Cairns rainforest-shrouded hinterland, is rightly regarded as one of Australia’s natural wonders. Superb rainforest, crater lakes and waterfalls are just some of the features, most of which are protected within national parks. This in combination with the rich pastoral plateau offers the traveller a singular corner of Australia where breathtaking contrast is the watchword. This is country into which you should never venture without first checking your film stock and your camera's batteries.

Set in the heart of one of the oldest land masses in Australia, the Tableland. Much of the region’s fascinating past is preserved in a permanent mineral exhibition, exotic cave, crystal museum and rock museum in the main street, and in the old Post Office Gallery, while the links to Chinese settlement are maintained in the restored Joss House.

A short drive to Halloran’s Hill Lookout provides a panoramic view embracing the Seven Sisters - al volcanic cinder cones. Atherton is central to the world heritage rainforest, mountains, fishable lakes and rivers, volcanic crater lakes and magnificent waterfalls that make the Atherton Tablelands above Cairns one of Australia's great tourist destinations.

Central town of the Tableland. The Atherton Maize Festival is held in the last week of September and the annual show is held in July.
