A popular weekend spot in the Gold Coast hinterland just 30min from Australia'
most famous strip of sand and surf, Canungra is a sleepy little village in the
south-western shadow of Mt Tamborine.
Today, the town is largely dependent on the Australian Army’s Land Warfare
training centre set in the rugged bushland above the valley floor. The spiritual
heart of the centre is a memorial to the Canungra-trained advisers and instructors
of the Australian Army Training Team who served in Vietnam.
The central English village green and old churchyard is a marshalling point
for bush-walking and horse-riding safaris into the majestic Lamington National
Park and its two rainforest lodges, O’Reilly’s and Binna Burra.
The skies above Canungra are often dotted with hang-gliders and para-gliders
who launch themselves off the western slopes of Mt Tamborine.
