Mitchell is located on the Warrego Highway 587 klms west of Brisbane and 176
klms east of Charleville. At the junction of the Warrego Highway, the shire
has two prominent geological features, the majestic Carnarvon Ranges in the
north and the Maranoa River which winds north to the south through much of
the shire. More than half of the Booringa's population of 2,000 live in the
town of Mitchell where the shire has its base, with the remainder spread throughout
the two smaller centres of Amby and Mungallala
