Located
127 klm north of Mackay. Proserpine,
is a sugar town 40 kilometres inland from Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour,
the major port of the Whitsundays. There are guided tours of the sugar mill
during the crushing season from June to November. Centrepiece of Rotary Park
is a pre-World War I steam locomotive and the Cultural Hall displays local
Aboriginal artefacts and geological specimens.
Conway National Park provides spectacular views over the Whitsunday's, while
the swimming, fishing and water-skiing playground of Lake Proserpine is 20km
west of town. Proserpine, of course, is a collection point for links to the
fabulous resort islands of the Whitsundays .
Agricultural shows in June and a Mardi Gras in July. In the hinterland Cedar Creek Falls drops into rainforest rich in orchids and ferns.
