Stanthorpe, QLD

In spring, this is one of the most beautiful areas in Queensland when the countryside bursts into a profusion of colour, with wild flowers and wattle predominating. In the granite belt - an isolated plateau in the Great Dividing range running along the border between NSW and Queensland, about 225km south-west of Brisbane - Stanthorpe is perched almost 1000m above sea level and is set in one of the State’s coolest regions.

Today, Stanthorpe is noted for its wine and large-scale cultivation of fruits, like apples, pears, plums, grapes, and peaches. More than 90 varieties of wild orchids grow in the region. Local producers regularly use mountain and civic markets to sell their fare. Ranked among Australia's most popular and most visited regional galleries, the Stanthorpe Art Gallery changes its exhibitions based on its own and borrowed collections every month.

An altitude of 811m makes it the highest town in the State out of the Atherton Tablelands. The rich soil produces much of Australia’s crop of apples, table grapes and other fruit. There is also a flourishing wine industry.
