Located
on the east coast of Yorke Peninsula atop 25-metre clay cliffs rising from
the St Vincent Gulf, Ardrossan is the state’s largest eastern port.
Large tonnages of dolomite, grain and salt pass across the port’s wharves,
while the long jetty doubles as the perfect spot to net or dab for the town’s
renowned blue crabs. The local beaches are safe and clean.
The regional museum retraces the story behind the remarkable stump jump plough
invented by local selector Richard Bower Smith in 1870. The plough revolutionised
the method of cultivating virgin land without having to endure the back-breaking
work of grubbing out stumps and rocks.
The town, 150 kilometres north of Adelaide, sits above remarkable, brick-red
clay cliffs and the first settlers knew the area as Clay Gully or Parara.
BHP’s quarry lookout offers sweeping views of the gulf beneath which
lies the wreck of the Zanoni.
