133 klm north-east of Adelaide, Blanchetown enjoyed its heyday in the mid-19th
century. In those days, Blanchetown was an important riverbank terminal where
goods were offloaded from paddle-steamers to be cleared through the local
Customs House. The town’s prosperity foundered when the railway by-passed
it in favour of upstream Morgan.
Today it presents a fascinating mix of historic buildings and a motley cluster
of riverside weekenders fashioned largely from corrugated iron, fibro and
driftwood.
The first of a series of seven locks on the Murray was constructed at Blanchetown
in 1922. Interestingly, the Bookfield Conservation Park 11 klm out of town
- is a dedicated habitat for the southern, hairy-nosed wombat
Delightful little town which still retains some of its century old charm despite being bypassed by time and progress. The highest bridge over the Murray River spans the river taking the place of a ferry which operated since the days of settlement over 130 years ago.
