Burra,
SA
Burra’s golden age as ‘the largest inland centre in Australia’
have long gone, along with the Bald Hills copper. That heritage is captured
by such distinctive buildings as the miners' dugouts - simple shelters that
once were home to about 1800 miners and their families - Redruth Gaol, the
mid-19th century cluster of cottages of Malowen Lowarth and the Burra Market
Square Museum, which lives the past through a recreated cottage, general store
and post office.
Today the town of 1200 is the commercial centre for surrounding agricultural
producers. Clare, its vineyards and wine tasting rooms are just 30km to the
south-west.
Burra is separated into two parts, a heritage of the mining company founding a monopolistic settlement, and the government countering with five townships now collectively Burra North, Redruth, Aberdeen, Llwchyr, Hampton and Copperhouse. The mine site, shut down in 1877, is bare except for two chimneys and a couple of engine houses open to the sky. The Burra Show is held in October and there is a Copper Festival in October every few years.
