Coonawarra lies at the heart of the world-famous wine region of the same name. It is in South Australia's Limestone Coast region, close to the Victorian border 380km south east of Adelaide. When John Riddoch planted a vineyard here in 1890, he probably had little idea that the area would become a leading table wine producer. The terra rossa soil gives the wines a unique and characteristic flavour. Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the best known wine, but quality reds and also whites are also produced.
There
are many wineries in the area, most of which are open for tastings and cellar
door sales. Events such as the Coonawarra Cabernet Celebration and Barrel
Auction and the annual Coonawarra Cup held at the Penola Racecourse bring
visitors to this unique wine region
Small town that is the centre of an expanding wine region known for its dry reds. The town was established in 1899 for fruit growing.
