Curramulka
,
SA
Curramulka is acknowledged as having the most extensive chain of limestone
caves in the southern hemisphere. The sheer size of the system is also the
reason why so little is known about it. They are considered too dangerous
for amateur cavers so the entire system is closed to the public. The only
regular visitors are members of the Police Rescue Squad who do part of their
training in the caverns.
Curramulka is within easy driving distance of the coastal resorts towns of
Port Victoria and Port Vincent and is only 15km north-east of the regional
‘capital’ of Minlaton. Farming land was first opened up in the
1870s and Curramulka enjoyed its heyday in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
when most farming produce moved through nearby Port Julia.
