Freeling
,
SA
Just 60km north of Adelaide, Freeling is a small town in the buffer zone between
the fringe suburbs of the city and an agricultural area primarily producing
grain and fodder, with a sprinkling of mixed sheep and pig farms. The town
has an active historical group, whose members are working assiduously to restore
and reclaim buildings which best reflect the development of the district.
They already have in place a heritage walk that takes in a number of historically
significant buildings, including the railway precinct.
Nearby Kapunda became the first copper mining town in Australia in 1844 when
the first ore was produced. The celebrated vineyards of the Barossa Valley
are just a short drive to the south. Named for a mid-19th century Surveyor-general
is attracting more and more commuters who are prepared to make the hour-long
journey to and from their Adelaide offices for the genteel, rural lifestyle
at the gateway to the Barossa Valley
