Georgetown, 60km north of the world-respected wine country of the Clare Valley,
is a small town with a population of 200. It is the commercial centre for
a very fertile agricultural area whose base is mixed farming. Georgetown is
45km west of the Spencer Gulf and the huge silos and smelting stacks that
identify Port Pirie.
A large town of about 15,000 residents, Port Pirie is the administrative and
cultural heart of the state’s north. Its Regional Art Gallery in the
Tourist and Arts Centre regularly holds both local and touring exhibitions,
while the Northern Festival Centre stages local and national productions.
Georgetown makes a relaxed base for day trips to Port Pirie, the Clare Valley
and a short drive east beyond the Rocky River to Crystal Brook. You can tap
into a rich lode of regional history in the National Trust-listed Old Bakehouse
Museum in Crystal Brook. The museum is open on Sunday and public holidays
or by special arrangement.
