Keith, SA

230 klm south-east of Adelaide, the Dukes Highway town of Keith is at the centre of a region which was once damned with the name Ninety Mile Desert. Thanks to good husbandry, plant nutrition and modern farming techniques it has been transformed into Coonalpyn Downs. Jewel in the town’s crown is the central church. Built in 1910, the old church buildings features 11 locally made and designed leadlight windows which trace the town’s history and development.

Just off the Adelaide-Melbourne highway, Circlework is a water feature created by artist James Darling to celebrate the vital cycle of water through the Australian landscape. A short drive to the north takes you to 28,000ha Mount Rescue Conservation Park which protects a large sandplain sprinkled with pink gums, heath and a variety of wildlife.

To the south of town, Mt Monster Conservation Park presents panoramic views of the region. Four-wheel drive enthusiasts will be in their element among the mallee fowl, rufous-crowned emu-wrens, western grey kangaroos, dragon lizards and company in the vast, 270,150ha Ngarkat Conservation Park

In the shadow of Mt Monster’s rocky outcrop this town struggled along until the Ninety Mile Desert project wrought a farming miracle.
