Loxton the title of Garden City of the Riverland. With a population of 6500,
Loxton, which is 260km north-east of Adelaide, is one of the larger Murray
River towns. The town was originally known as Loxton’s Hut on account
of a primitive pine and pub hut built on the riverbank by a boundary rider
during the 1880s when graziers were pushing into the district.
Tthe riverfront Historical Village has 30 or so re-created buildings include
a bank, bakery, sheds and railway station. The Historical Village fair is
held over Easter during odd-numbered years
Garden town, with much of the beautification of parks, lawns and trees contributed by a strong community spirit. Riverland Golf Week takes place in May and the Loxton show is held in October.
