Milang is located in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. Milang was once acknowledged as the largest inland port in South Australia.
In its peak days, a constant stream of paddle steamers docked at Milang’s wharves after a slow, lazy trip down the Murray to unload their cargoes on to Adelaide-bound bullock drays. The pace of trade stepped up a gear or two with the coming of the railway which, in addition to normal cargo, often carried leeches for the Royal Adelaide Hospital and snakes for the Adelaide Zoo.
Today yachts, sail-boards and powered cruises have replaced the steamers as a new generation of recreational sailors enjoy the waters off Milang. The town really comes alive every Australia Day for one of the largest freshwater sailing classics to Goolwa
