Owen is a typical, small rural centre in mixed cropping country about 70km
north of Adelaide. What sets Owen apart, however, is the surrounding parkland
generously studded with wetlands that support a wide variety of plant, animal
and birdlife. One hotel, one post office, grocery-cum-deli and sports clubs
keep the community rolling.
For the bigger things in life, locals and visitors alike drive 20km north
to Balaklava whose National Trust Museum conserves relics of early settlement
in the region. Local handiwork is on display in both the Country Grafters
store and in the Courthouse Gallery.
The Lions Club Walking Trail follows the banks of the Wakefield River. Stands
of impressive river box gums shade picnickers in the curiously named Devils
Gardens Reserve on Balaklava's northern outskirts, while visitors will find
some relaxing bush walks flanking the Wakefield River on the southern approach
to the town
