The South Australian town of Pinnaroo lies just 6 klm inside the border. In
Big River Country, Pinnaroo might be small, but its avenue of trees and its
Mallee Tourist and Heritage Centre gives the town a distinctive character.
The centre is guardian of more than 1300 varieties of grain, a printing museum,
restored farm engines and implements, a collection of historic artefacts,
photographs, and an aviary of parrots and native birds common to the Mallee.
Pinnaroo and nearby Lameroo sit above a huge subterranean artesian basin which
provides abundant water for the area and make ideal bases for exploring regional
conservation parks. The largest, Billiatt, conserves 60,000ha of mallee scrub
and dunes which conserve a wide range of wildlife including pygmy possums
and the rare Mallee fowl. Irrigation sustains vibrant mixed farming operations
which produce grain, beef, vegetables, pork, chickens and eggs, marrons and
yabbies and Geraldton wax cut flowers
Tranquil farming town on the fringe of Coonalpyn Downs, surrounded by flat land producing grains and pasture. Billiatt Conservation Park, an hours drive, is 36,000ha of mallee.
