30
kilometres south of Mt Gambier, Port MacDonnell’s importance as a border
trading port might have diminished, but the off-shore harvests of rock-lobsters
has kept the small town on the commercial and recreational fishing map. The
port’s lobster fleet, in fact, is the largest in the state.
The National Trust classified, 28-room Custom House stands as a reminder of
the halcyon days when the port was an inter-state clearing house, while the
Maritime Museum preserves a photograph record of the district’s development
and a number of artefacts from local shipwrecks. A couple of kilometres out
of town stands Dingley Dell, the restored, white-washed cottage which was
home to celebrated poet and horseman Adam Lindsay Gordon.

The Customs House is a reminder of the 1860s when this little port was the second busiest in the colony. Piccaninnie Ponds has several underwater caves popular with divers with its spectacularly clear water.
