Renmark, SA

Chief town of the Riverland and centre of the State’s biggest irrigation scheme, covering 6800ha of citrus, stone fruit, grapes and vegetables. It is also the nation’s oldest irrigation settlement, in 1887 beting by three months a Victorian scheme for Mildura. Moored on the river is the 1911 paddle steamer ‘Industry’ which has been restored. Renmark holds its Orange Week in the first week of spring school holidays and there is a Christmas pageant the first Friday in December. The Renmark show is held in October.

Renmark, the town which was transformed by Australia’s first irrigation scheme, is 258km north-east by road from Adelaide and a leisurely 570km cruise up the Murray in Big River Country. Landlubbers can hop aboard the Big River Rambler for a relaxing cruise to the spectacular cliffs at Whirlpool Corner. The dry climate and year-round sun make Renmark a great destination no matter what the season.

There are galleries made for browsing, fruit stalls to stock up on the district’s famous products, beckoning wineries, billabongs and secluded creeks to explore by canoe and fish and yabbies to be caught. The town is also well off for riverfront picnic spots. And be sure to set aside an hour or two to check out the thousands of varieties of blooms on show at Ruston’s spectacular rose garden.

The lookout tower part way along the road to Murtho presents a panoramic view over the cliffs at Whirlpool Corner and the river plains. Renmark is a convenient launching pad for journeys into the region's internationally significant conservation parks
