Warooka, a small rural town on the ‘foot’ of Yorke Peninsula 228km
from Adelaide, was known to the local Aboriginal tribes as Wiruka, or muddy
water hole. The story of early settlement and development of the town can
be traced in the Warooka District Museum.
Today, thanks to the use of fertilisers to overcome a manganese deficiency
in the soil, Warooka is at the centre of a barley-producing area. The swimming,
fishing, diving and sailboarding haven of Edithburg on the southern tip of
the Peninsula, is within comfortable driving distance of Warooka, which offers
a restricted range of motel and cottage accommodation
