Wilpena Pound, SA

Wilpena Pound is in the heart of the Flinders Ranges National Park. It is a unique rock amphitheatre with just a single entrance. It can only be explored by foot, and it has well-marked graded bushwalks.

This best known feature of the Fliniders is an outstanding natural phenomenon. The oval bowl 16km long and 10km wide is within a 35km rim of steep quartzite cliffs which face outward. The landscape is truly wild and the rocky walls change colour dramatically during the day. The highest point, St Mary’s Peak (1164m), is the tallest mountain in the range. The only way into the bowl is over Sliding Rock along Wilpena Creek.
