The outback contains 80% of the states area and less than 0.75% of its population.
Whichever way you travel Port Augusta at the tip of the Spencer Gulf is the
largest concentration of people you will see until Alice Springs or Roxby
Downs.
Oldest and best known of Australia’s opal towns, as well as the world’s largest opal producing centre. Dirt heaps from hundreds of working and abandoned mines litter the mulga and saltbush landscape set against a backdrop of the Stuart Ranges. Much of the population live underground to avoid the fierce heat which often exceeds 50c. The Breakaway is a scenic colourful valley with mounds of rock which have resisted erosion.
