Cape Barren Island, Tasmania
Less than 100 people live on the high and rocky island which is separated from Flinders by about 6km of water. There is a small settlement with a school and medical centre, but most of the island is in its natural state. Farming and mutton birds are the main industries. Every September the island is the scene of one of the most fantastic sights in the bird world, the arrival from the Bering Straits and Japan of hundreds of thousands of mutton birds.
