Lake Pedder, Tasmania

Centre of a bitter conservation controversy before it was flooded in the early 1972s as part of the Gordon River hydro-electric scheme. Opponents are still angry at the loss of beach, rare plants and surrounding buttongrass plains. Now 25 times its former size, the lake and its companion Lake Gordon contain almost 30 times as much water as Sydney Harbour. Lake Pedder has a reputation for the size of its brown trout and there are tours on the lake and boating facilities.
