The State’s leading attraction for visitors and the best preserved ruins from Australia’s convict past. Between 1830 and 1877 about 12,500 convicts passed through the colony’s main penal centre. Some buildings are in an exceptional state of preservation. Across the bay is Point Puer, where juvenile offenders were kept. Off the point is Isle of the Dead, burial place of 1769 convicts and 180 free people. Remarkable Cave, on Basket Bay, is accessible at low tide, when it is possible to walk through to the beach.
| Port Arthur is officially Tasmania's number one tourist attraction. Port Arthur was established as a convict settlement and was in operation from the 1830 until 1877. The ruins of the church are also in the Port Arthur Historic Site. | ![]() |
