Settlement Island, Tasmania

Most feared place in Tasmania’s penal history. The most intractable prisoners went to this small rocky hump in Macquarie Harbour, often to die in appalling conditions. Relics of penal occupation remain, but most evidence has rotted away. Nearby is the small rock of Grunnet Island, where convicts were sent as punishment from Settlement Island, it was just large enough for a kitchen and sleeping quarters.
