Stanley, Tasmania

The Nut, a 151m high rock headland, dominates the little old town at its foot. The rock is a volcanic plug formed when lava exploded through a fault more than 10 million years ago. Several such volcanic plugs are dotted along Tasmania’s northern coastline.

Stanley is a place with shipwrecks and cottage gardens and see inside the historic churches. The Stanley Nut is actually the core or volcanic plug of what was once a volcano over 13 million years ago. Almost surrounded by ocean, the Nut rises 152 metres (500 feet) above sea level.
